PHOENIX (AP) -
A man charged with participating in a gun smuggling ring is expected to change his plea in the federal government's botched investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.

Julio Jose Carrillo is set to change his plea June 8.

Carrillo had previously pleaded not guilty to faces charges of conspiracy, dealing guns without a license, making false statements during a firearms purchase and money laundering.

He is accused of buying 10 AK-47 variants from a gun shop in metro Phoenix on behalf of the ring.

So far, half of the people in the alleged 20-member smuggling ring have pleaded guilty.

Federal authorities have faced criticism for allowing suspected straw gun buyers to walk away from gun shops with weapons, rather than arrest the suspects and seize the guns there.
